This class is a fun introduction to backyard birds and winter migrants! Students will learn field marks for identifying birds and meet McDowell's educational raptors up close. We will also cover how to attract birds to your yard, make our own suet, and practice using binoculars in the field. We'll spend plenty of time birding in different habitats and submit our observations to the Great Backyard Bird Count!

An additional supply fee of $5 will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of the class.

Class Notes: Students will experience easy to moderate walking in cold conditions.

Required Class Materials: backpack, water bottle, notebook and pencil, warm layers, binoculars, optional: field guide, sketchbook, personal first aid kit

Class Level: Beginner/Novice, Multi-Level

Kendra Burns is McDowell Environental Center's Animal Program Manager. She got her intro to birds with Big Dave in 2011 through McDowell's raptor program and Dave's vast bird knowledge. In Alabama, she's worked at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve and the Alabama 4H Science School. She observed and learned about Southeastern birds daily while working at the Woodlands Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. One of Kendra's favorite winter pastimes is relaxing on the couch with a hot cup of coffee while watching the birds visit feeders outside her living room window.  Her cat makes for an excitable indoor birdwatching companion!

David "Big Dave" Hollaway is McDowell Environmental Center's Senior Naturalist. He is an avid birder who often interrupts his own sentences to point out birds he hears calling nearby! Before coming to McDowell, Dave was at Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve, Chattanooga Nature Center, and McWaine Center. He has worked with birds of prey for 30 years, both as an educator and a rehabilitator. Dave will enthusiastically teach you the art of pishing for birds.
