Bring your favorite old chair, and have a great time weaving or caning a new seat! Materials used include binder cane (herringbone pattern), porch weave patterns, flat reed (herringbone pattern), and flat fiber (herringbone pattern). Chairs need to be clean and in good repair. Expect to complete one or two projects. 

Required Class Materials: the chair you plan to work on, scissors, needle nose pliers, flat head screwdriver

An estimated supply fee of $15-30 will be collected by the instructor at during the class. The supply fee will depend on the size chair and amount of caning material each student uses. 

Class Level: Beginner/Novice, Multi-Level

Gwen Chafin was a student of her father, Jesse Thomason, and later developed as a master artist in her own right. He taught her how to use white oak strips to bottom chairs and to construct several basket types, including the intricate egg basket. Gwen now demonstrates her craft at heritage programs in the Hoover city schools and participates in festivals such as Kentuck in Northport and Homestead Hollow in Springville. Gwen is also the recipient of numerous Master Artist awards from the Alabama State Council for the Arts. Chafin's chair bottoming and caning skills are especially in demand. Gwen and her husband, Don, own and operate Chafin's Chair Caning in Arab, Al. Gwen is also a retired teacher and principal from Arab Alabama's city school system.
