Have you been looking for a good excuse to escape to Camp McDowell for the weekend?

Pricing ranges from $121-$341 for 3 days

This upcoming memorial day weekend, The Alabama Folk School will be hosting its first ever Community Recreation and Dance weekend! This weekend will be an excellent opportunity to experience a more relaxed approached to the typical Alabama Folk School workshop. There are no definitive classes, but our Bethany craft facilities will be open for use. One could spend all or none of their time crafting, painting, and working on various projects, or none of it.

Camp McDowell is home to a large stretch of beautiful hiking trails. From shorter lake trails in Bethany, too longer day hikes by the creek, if you want to do some walking and enjoy the lovely Alabama Spring time nature, this will be a great weekend and location for you. Along with hiking, Camp McDowell also has a zero entry pool, paddle boats, canoes, and plenty of spaces to fish. With a short hike, natural swimming holes are available too.

Youth are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult but are encouraged to attend!

For the extra young folk, Camp will be offering a Youngins Camp for the weekend! More information on hours, pricing, age and staff coming soon!

Music is highly encouraged! Feel free to bring an instrument and jump in one the jam sessions happening throughout the course of the weekend. We are super excited to announce that The Red Mountain Yellowhammers will be joining us for organized Old Time Dancing both nights.

The Red Mountain Yellowhammers” play good-time old-time string band music. At festivals and clubs you'll hear them play high-energy dance tunes and old-timey blues, and sing songs from the earliest days of country music, when folks like the Carter Family and the Delmore Brothers were the stars. You're likely to hear a lot of impromptu humor as well.

Their expertise as a dance band has garnered them invitations to dance festivals across the country. At dances they dip into their large repertoire of powerful contra dance medleys and driving square dance tunes.  They learned many of their tunes from older fiddlers in Alabama and Tennessee, and they play in a style that reflects the region in which they live.

Folks often describe the Yellowhammers as a wall of sound. Components of this sound are fiddle by Jim Cauthen, guitar by Joyce Cauthen, mandolin by Phil Foster, harmonica and banjo uke by Jamie Finley, and bass by Nancy Jackson.
