Barbara Mitchell loves working with fabric and fiber in an artistic way, because it allows her to express some of her deepest beliefs—the grace of God, the beauty of the created world, and the sacred elements of daily life. All of her designs are original. About a dozen years ago Barbara began making clergy stoles featuring fabric with nature designs, and soon added quilted art wall hangings to her portfolio. She has sewn almost all her life and created her fiber arts techniques by trial and error. For four years, Barbara's art quilts were chosen for Sacred Threads biennial exhibition outside Washington DC. Her works have been included in several books, magazines, and online sites. Her art is in private and liturgical collections.

Much of Barbara's surface work is hand stitched appliqué, as she builds up layer upon layer of fabric. She then adds embellishments such as hand embroidery, beading, touches of fabric paint, yarn, and thread painting for highlights. She then quilts the complete piece by machine. Barbara finds the handwork to be a form of meditation and prayer.
