Instructor: Jim Cauthen

($190 tuition + $71 - $291 lodging & meals package of choice)

Have you ever wanted to play a fiddle but haven’t made the leap? Do you know the difference between a fiddle and a violin? This course will help you with both of those issues plus more. By the end of this course you should find yourself with a basic understanding of the instrument, its care and feeding, how to at least get sounds from it that won’t send your cat or dog running for cover. Hopefully you will emerge from the course with a love of the instrument (if you didn’t already have it), a little less trepidation about playing it, a foundation for moving forward, and at least one fiddle tune under your belt.

Required Class Materials: Yourself and a willing heart. If you have a fiddle and bow then bring it. If not then let us know beforehand so we can have one or both available for you. Bring a recording device if you have it (a smartphone generally works just fine).

Class Level: Beginner/Novice

Jim Cauthen has played fiddle for over 30 years in various band configurations. Two of the bands, Red Mountain and Flying Jenny, have produced a total of six CD recordings. Red Mountain has played for concerts and dances across the nation. Jim has taught fiddle at the Alabama Folk School and at the Swannanoa Gathering, has won a number of fiddle competitions, and has served as a judge at several fiddlers’ conventions.
