Instructor: Hilary Dirlam

($240 tuition + $107-397 lodging & meals package of choice)

This guitar class will be structured for advanced beginners up through intermediate/advanced pickers. We’ll be concentrating on backing up old-time tunes and songs, with emphasis on good rhythm. Beginners will work on holding a pick (if they haven't done so before), smoothly changing between chords, some bass runs, and adding new chords to their repertoire. There will be excursions for more advanced students into chord options up the neck, a bit of lead playing, and interesting ways of getting from one chord to another. We will have a guitar-savvy fiddler, Mary Gordon, in class to help individual students and provide melody for backup playing.

Required Class Materials: Please bring an extra set of strings, a capo, a tuner, a recording device, and a song or tune you’d like to work on.

Class Level: Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Multi-Level

Hilary Dirlam got her first guitar at the age of twelve and has owned and played one ever since. While concentrating on backing up old-time tunes and traditional songs, she continues to explore other kinds of music. Hilary has performed, recorded and taught extensively, giving private lessons, at music camps, and, for six years at Celestial Mountain Music in Brevard, North Carolina. She has written several old-time music instruction books with Mary Gordon.
