In the Old Time world, the beautiful old chestnuts shine like gold. But would you believe there are hundreds of old tunes just as shiny and twice as golden?  In this class, we’ll explore some of the gems: old tunes from Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, and West Virginia.

We’ll dip into some tunings and find some unique settings of the classics! Happy G tunes that sound like C tunes! Tunes that defy categorization!  Along the way, we’ll discover some of the fiddle tips and tricks that make it sound old time, and we’ll look into the role of the guitar: finding good chord choices and keeping a reliable rhythm.

There might be some stories told along the way... and there will be plenty of fun!

Class Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Twin brothers, Greg & Jere Canote have spent most of their musical life singing and playing music as The Canote Brothers. They have played hundreds of square dances on their own as well as with dance icon Sandy Bradley & the Small Wonder String Band.  For thirteen years, Greg and Jere were the happy musical side-kicks for Bradley's National Public Radio program Sandy Bradley’s Potluck, and the two have led a successful ongoing string band workshop since 1983.

Greg and Jere have been on staff at many festivals and workshops, including the Swannanoa Gathering, Augusta Heritage Workshop, Mars Hill Blue Ridge Old-Time Week, Pinewoods, Puget Sound Guitar Workshop, Nimble Fingers, The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, and American Banjo Camp.

Jere is also a builder of instruments in the banjo family--open backed 5 string Banjos minstrel banjos, banjo-guitars, and banjo-ukes (using both standard banjo construction, and his unique "neck-through" body design).  Read more about Greg and Jere at www.canote.com.
