General Information 

The Alabama Folk School at Camp McDowell is pleased to host a 2018 Paint Out in collaboration with Alabama Plein Air Artists. A Paint Out is an opportunity for artists to gather informally and paint outdoors (en plein air) in a designated location. Paint Outs are open to the general public and Alabama Plein Air Artists members. There is no formal instruction during a Paint Out, but there are many opportunities to connect and share with other plein air artists.

Suggested Painting Spots

Camp McDowell is situated on 1,140 acres of fields and forests with miles of trails winding through beautiful sandstone canyons with waterfalls. There are a number of iconic buildings onsite, including two chapels, several rustic barns, and a log home built in the 1830’s. Camp McDowell is also home to a working farm with chickens, goats, and pigs.

Public bathroom facilities are located throughout Camp McDowell. Locations are marked on the campus map provided at check-in. 

Additional Program Information

There will be an optional sharing of daily paintings at 5:30 p.m. on Friday as part of the wine and cheese social. 

Depending on what other guest groups are present at Camp McDowell during the weekend, there may be an opportunity to host a wet paint show and sale on Saturday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. This will be confirmed closer to the event. 

The $22 registration fee includes a Camp McDowell reusable water bottle, wine and cheese social on Friday night, and snacks throughout the Paint Out.

Meals & Snacks

The Alabama Folk School will host a wine and cheese social on Friday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. Group meals will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday at one of Camp McDowell’s dining halls. We are able to accommodate most food allergies or dietary restrictions. All meals are $7 and must be reserved in advance. 

Box lunches will be available for purchase on Friday and Saturday from the Camp McDowell dining hall. Box lunches are $7.50 and must be reserved in advance. We are able to accommodate most food allergies or dietary restrictions. Alternatively, the lodges are equipped with kitchen facilities if you wish to bring and store your own lunches. 

Snacks will also be available at various times throughout the Paint Out.

Camp McDowell meal options will be open soon for purchase. 

Accommodations

Camp McDowell has hotel-style lodging available onsite. Hotel-style rooms are furnished with two queen beds, linens, towels, and hand soap. Please bring your own toiletries. Lodging is available the Friday of the Paint Out, as well as Thursday evening for individuals who would prefer to arrive on Thursday.

Choose from several lodging options designed to fit your budget. All lodges have covered porches and a common area, including a seating area, fireplace, and kitchenette with refrigerator, sink, stove and coffee maker. Lodges are NOT equipped with televisions or WIFI, but WIFI is available in dinning halls and meeting areas at Camp McDowell. 

  • Single Occupancy Room: Have a hotel-style room with 2 queen beds and an en suite bathroom all to yourself. 
  • Double Occupancy Room: Share the hotel-style room with 2 queen beds and an en suite bathroom with a family member or friend. 
  • Commuter: There are a couple hotels located in Jasper, AL—about a 30 minute drive from Camp McDowell.

About Alabama Plein Air Artists

The Mission of the Alabama Plein Air Artists (APAA) is to inform, encourage, and inspire through the practice and discipline of plein air painting.

APAA is a group of artists who gather at least 10 months out of the year to paint outdoors (en plein air) at various sites in Alabama and neighboring states. Members are predominately from but not limited to the state of Alabama. APAA consists of a Director, Advisory Board, and members who host paint outs, events and shows.
