Instructor: Charlie and Nancy Hartness

($190 tuition + $71 - $291 lodging & meals package of choice)

Okay, so you’ve never played a stringed instrument, or you used to play guitar, long ago. You like to sing, and want to accompany yourself. You’ve never been a musician, but want to be one now. The ukulele is your ticket to the land of music.

Class Level: Beginner/Novice

Charlie grew up in Macon, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia twice before going to Boston for medical school. From Boston he traveled to Portland, Oregon where he lived for 23 years and worked as an ER doc. He started learning to play music after a visit to the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington in 1994. He kept going back there every year and became friends with musicians from all over the country. He met Nancy there in 1996. She is the most Southern Northern woman he’s ever known. Nancy’s still trying to figure that one out.

Nancy is a Seattle native who attended the University of Washington, majoring in Children’s Drama  and Elementary Education. She took up the mandolin in 1994, and when she attended the Fiddle Tunes Festival in Port Townsend in 1996 she realized she’d been playing Northern music, but was Southern by unintentional inclination. By the end of the week her focus was changed—–now she plays string band music on banjo, guitar and ukulele.
